Question: Is the Wedgie™ International Cycling Union (UCI) legal?
Answer: The Wedgie is not a fairing*. As every section/surface serves a purpose (mounting flanges, tool box, bottle holder), it does not break any known UCI rules. To validate this statement, an application has been submitted to the UCI Equipment Unit for an official ruling.
(*fairings reduce air resistance and are prohibited)
Question: Is the Wedgie™ International Triathlon Union (ITU) legal?
Answer: Again, the Wedgie is not a fairing, since every section/surface serves a purpose (mounting flanges, tool box, bottle holder) and it does not break any known ITU rules. In addition (as per the ITU rule book, under Section E.3.1 Equipment /Bicycles), if the bicycle is used in a draft legal triathlon and/or duathlon races, then UCI rules shall apply (see section above).
Question: Can you store a tubular tire in a Wedgie?
Answer: The UCI and ITU have rules regarding the length of storage containers and hydration systems. The tool box on the Wedgie is within the accepted limits. Given this, the storage space is approximately 7 inches across the top and 4 5/8 inches deep. We have successfully fit a tubular tire into a Wedgie (Vittoria Corsa EVO-CX), but it was an extremely tight fit. In addition there is no room left to store the CO2 cartridges and air chuck. The Wedgie is best used to store a tube for a clincher tire.
Question: How does it mount on my bicycle?
Answer: One half of the Wedgie is attached to the bicycle frame using 2-way tape (the same type used in the auto industry), the other half is attached to the first half using rubber tabs.
Question: Does the Wedgie™ use my bicycle frame’s bottle mounts or “bosses”?
Answer: No, the Wedgie™ attaches to the bicycle frame independent of the bicycle frame’s bottle mounts.
Question: Does the Wedgie™ hurt?
Answer: Nope – lol, please be assure to attach the Wedgie to the bicycle frame.
Question: What size of water bottle can I put into the Wedgie™?
Answer: Standard 24 oz. water bottles and oversize water bottles (28 oz. / standard diameter). Since the bottle holder’s “claws” can expand and contract due to the rubber mounting tabs, sizes other than the standard diameter can be used. The minimum bottle diameter is 6.5 cm / 2 9/16 inches.
Question: How do I remove / replace the bottle from the holder?
Answer: The same as any traditional water bottle cage:
To remove – just pull it forward and up
To replace – just slide it in
Question: How much / What can I fit inside the Wedgie™?
Answer: The Wedgie was design to carry your race day essentials:
1 – bicycle tire inner tube
2 to 3 – tire irons
2 – 16oz. CO2 Cartridges (for inflating tires)
1 – Air Chuck (attaches to CO2 Cartridges)
Question: What size/type of bike frame will the Wedgie™ fit?
Answer: The Wedgie will fit on all adult double diamond bicycle frames.
Double diamond bicycle frames refer to a frame made up of two triangle (a triangle formed by the: top tube, down tube and seat tub, and a triangle is formed by the: seat tub, seat stays and chain stays).
Question: I like to have two water bottles, where can I mount a second bottle?
Answer: For optimum aerodynamics, ideally, you should mount a 2nd water bottle between your handle bar’s aero extensions.
Question: I’m not an elite athlete, so… what can the Wedgie™ do for me?
Answer: You do not have to be an elite athlete to gain the benefits of better aerodynamic and less weight… the Wedgie will allow you to cycle further or faster for the same effort.
Question: What is the Wedgie™ made out of?
Answer: Carbon fiber is substantially lighter than metal, approximately five times stronger than steel, twice as stiff and does not suffer from fatigue.
Question: The Wedgie™ is mounted using 2-way tape… how do I remove it?
Answer: Use dental floss to cut through the 2-way tape and then remove any tape residue using a solvent. To reapply, you can use any automotive grade 2-way tape (available at all automotive and most hardware stores).
Question: The weight of the Wedgie is approximately 100 grams? What it the exact weight?
Answer: The weight of the Wedgie is 98 grams, but there are factors that affect the final weight:
- “Wedgie Wedges” Since each bicycle has its own unique frame tube size and shape; mounting wedges are used to attach the Wedgie to the bicycle. To accommodate the different shapes, the Wedgie can be mounted using either the 5deg; or the 10deg; wedge.
Derailleur Notch? Front derailleurs are mounted using either “braze on”, “riveted plate” or a “clamp”.
- Braze On: No notch is required
- Riveted Plate: Notch required on drive side of Wedgie
- Clamp: Notch required on both sides of Wedgie
Please specify which bicycle make/model or front derailleur mounting system your bike uses when ordering and the Wedgie can be notched for you. If you have any other questions please contact us.
